5 Last-Minute Chocolate Gift Ideas for Chocolate Lovers

It’s Christmas Eve and the festive buzz is everywhere — yet somehow my plans for a calm, organised lead up to the holidays have gone a little off course. I imagined leisurely wrapping presents while watching holiday films and nibbling on sweet treats, but instead I found myself racing through the whole job in a frantic blur. Wrapping paper, ribbons and tape ended up scattered across the room and I paid the price with a sore back and a very messy living room.

Work pressures this week didn’t help: I didn’t get the slow-cooker chili con carne prepped for easy holiday meals, I didn’t make the mini salted caramel cupcake cheesecakes I had planned for Boxing Day, and I didn’t publish this post when I intended to. If you’re also scrambling to get things finished before the holidays, know that you’re not alone.

If you’re short on time but still want to bring something homemade and thoughtful to parties, neighbours, or hosts, here are five simple last-minute chocolate gift ideas you can make quickly. These treats are easy to prepare, look attractive when wrapped in plain baking paper or a clear bag with a ribbon, and make excellent hostess gifts or small presents after the festivities too.

Each idea below is straightforward and works well packaged in boxes or cello bags. First on the list is an easy double chocolate peanut brittle I made for several friends and family. It’s crunchy, nutty and finished with both milk and white chocolate for a festive look.

Summary: Quick peanut brittle topped with milk and white chocolate — a perfect last-minute chocolate gift.

Ingredients

  • 4 cups roasted salted peanuts
  • 4 cups caster sugar
  • 10.5 tablespoons butter, chopped
  • 7 ounces milk chocolate
  • 2.6 ounces white chocolate

Instructions

  1. Line two medium baking trays (approximately 20 x 30 cm or equivalent) with baking paper and set aside.
  2. In a large, heavy saucepan combine the sugar with 2 cups (470 ml) of cold water. Heat over medium, stirring until the sugar dissolves, about 5 minutes. Then bring to a boil and continue to cook without stirring until the mixture turns a deep caramel colour; this can take around 20 minutes, so be patient and watch closely to avoid burning.
  3. Remove the pan from the heat immediately and stir in the chopped butter, then fold in the peanuts. Pour the hot mixture into the prepared trays and spread evenly.
  4. Melt the milk chocolate either in short bursts in the microwave or in a heatproof bowl set over simmering water. Drizzle the melted milk chocolate over the top, then repeat with the white chocolate to create a swirled finish. Allow the trays to cool completely — a few hours or overnight — then break the brittle into rough pieces.

Number two on my quick-gift list is simple chocolate rocks — just melted chocolate mixed with nuts and dried fruit and spooned into small clusters. They’re fuss-free to make and look rustic and attractive when wrapped.

Third are chocolate orange truffles. Rich, scented with orange and coated or dusted as you prefer, truffles are indulgent and make a small batch gift that feels luxurious.

Fourth on the list: marshmallow and swirly chocolate crispy squares. These have a nostalgic, childhood vibe but can easily be dressed up for adults with a neat presentation or a ribboned box.

Finally, mango and pistachio chocolate bark. Spread melted chocolate, sprinkle with dried mango pieces and chopped pistachios, then chill and break into shards. The colourful toppings create a beautiful contrast that makes the bark feel special despite being quick to assemble.

All of these ideas are treats I’ve given as gifts and they’ve always gone down well. They’re simple to make, easy to package, and perfect for last-minute gift-giving when time is short but you still want to give something homemade and thoughtful.

Wishing you a season full of joy, peace and delicious food. Merry Christmas!
