Unlock Lasting Self-Confidence to Transform Your Life

I love sharing real stories of success to inspire others. Below is an edited interview with Sean Ray, a realtor at Urban Leasing in Houston, TX, soon expanding to Dallas. His journey from debt to a thriving real estate career is both practical and motivating. Sean offers concrete tips on paying off significant debt and building the income and career he always wanted — in less than a year.

How I Met Sean

I met Sean while we worked together briefly at a fine dining restaurant a few years ago. What stood out was his determination and unwavering belief that he would succeed. The restaurant job didn’t last, but Sean’s drive did. Since then he has risen quickly in the local real estate market, paid off tens of thousands of dollars in debt, and is on track to significantly increase his income.

Sean’s success isn’t luck. He studied his profession, built a strong network, and is always willing to help a friend or client. I know this personally — he recently helped my mother when she needed guidance finding a new place. His story demonstrates how confidence, consistent effort, and smart habits can transform a career.

How to Develop Self-Confidence That Will CHANGE Your LIFE

Can you give us a little background on yourself? What were your career goals growing up?

I grew up in a small town north of Dallas. As a kid I was energetic and often felt out of place at school. I wanted to be a zoologist and spend my days around animals. Over time my interests shifted — video games and storytelling became passions, and I explored creative fields, including acting and modeling, to understand human behavior more deeply. Later, psychology and sociology drew me in as ways to study how people think and interact.

What made you decide to change direction?

In my twenties I explored many paths until I joined a network marketing company called ACN. I didn’t make much money at first, but I learned a lot about personal development, mindset, and people. That foundation prepared me for real estate. A mentor, Brent Johnson, offered me an opportunity at Urban Leasing and Realty when I was low on income and carrying roughly $40,000 in debt. He even helped pay for my license and exam. That support changed my life.

What steps did you take to ensure you were successful?

At one low point I was a college graduate living at home and waiting tables. After being fired, I decided to leave and start fresh in Houston. I slept in my car for a while, worked odd jobs, and kept pushing. That “jump and grow wings on the way down” approach forced me to act. I committed to working harder than others for a full year so I could enjoy a better life later.

Rather than trying to fix every weakness, I focus on three core strengths: effective marketing, quick and consistent communication, and maintaining a positive attitude. I surround myself with optimistic, driven people and distance myself from negativity. That focus helps me build momentum and sustain growth.

Describe a typical day for you.

I start with positive affirmations and visualization. Early mornings — before 6am when possible — give me a big advantage, though my schedule as a self-employed realtor can easily stretch into late mornings. I usually have eggs for breakfast, shower while reflecting on goals, then tackle emails, follow-ups, client tours, and lunches. I aim to end the day with Muay Thai training or an audiobook to keep learning.

What are your short-term and long-term goals?

Short-term, I want to double last year’s income. I’ve already matched last year’s earnings with months still left in the year. I’m expanding into Dallas and plan to build a team of positive, driven people. Now that I’ve overcome my personal struggle, I’m focused on helping others do the same.

Long-term, I plan to be a full-time real estate investor and build rental income that supports family life. I’d like to reach a seven-figure net worth before starting a family, franchise a martial arts program focused on personal development for kids, and eventually use those resources to help design sustainable, planned community projects.

What advice do you have for anyone thinking about changing careers or starting a business?

First, cultivate an unyielding belief in yourself. Second, stay hungry — complacency kills progress. Never let success make you comfortable; always test your limits. Expect to fail often and treat each failure as a lesson. Finally, take advantage of market timing. Do what the market needs and combine passion with practical business thinking. There are more opportunities than ever to build wealth; with discipline and focus, you can be one of those success stories.
