Creamy Gingerbread Hot Chocolate Recipe

Rich and deeply chocolatey, this Healthy Gingerbread Hot Chocolate is the perfect holiday beverage. Creamy and smooth, it’s packed with warming spices — Ceylon cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg and a hint of cloves — and full of antioxidants from raw cacao. It tastes like Christmas in a mug, but made with wholesome, natural ingredients so you can enjoy it guilt-free all winter long.

Gingerbread Hot Chocolate

It’s that cozy season when blankets, favorite holiday movies and warm drinks take center stage. I love wrapping my hands around a hot mug and soaking up the holiday mood. This year the festive spirit arrived early in my home: I’ve already baked cookies and made gingerbread-flavored treats. Hot chocolate, of course, is a staple during colder days, and I’ve been experimenting with different flavors — but this gingerbread version quickly became a favorite.

Why this Gingerbread Hot Chocolate stands out

This gingerbread hot chocolate feels indulgent but is made from simple, nourishing ingredients. Instead of refined sugar and heavy cream, it uses natural sweeteners and plant-based milk. Raw cacao provides intense chocolate flavor and antioxidants, while a homemade gingerbread spice blend — Ceylon cinnamon, ground ginger, nutmeg and a pinch of cloves — gives the drink its seasonal character. A little blackstrap molasses adds depth and enhances the ginger notes.

For a creamy base I prefer cashew milk, but soy milk works well too. Both are naturally creamy and mildly sweet, so they complement the cacao and spices without overpowering them. If you like your hot chocolate sweeter, add a touch of pure maple syrup or natural honey to taste. Top the drink with whipped coconut cream and a dusting of cocoa or a few chopped cacao nibs for texture.

A rich, spiced hot chocolate with intense cacao flavor and classic gingerbread spices. Decadent-tasting yet made with wholesome ingredients.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup cashew milk (or soy milk)
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 tablespoons cacao powder (raw, unprocessed if possible)
  • 1 teaspoon blackstrap molasses
  • 1 teaspoon Ceylon cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • Pinch of ground cloves
  • Honey or maple syrup to taste (optional)

Toppings

  • Whipped coconut cream
  • Crushed cacao beans or cacao nibs
  • Cocoa powder or a few shavings of dark chocolate for dusting

Instructions

  1. In a medium saucepan, warm the cashew (or soy) milk with the vanilla over medium heat.
  2. Add the cacao powder, blackstrap molasses and the spice mix (cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg and cloves). Whisk or stir until the cacao is fully dissolved. Keep the heat moderate — do not boil.
  3. Heat the mixture just until steaming and well warmed, about a few minutes. Taste and add honey or maple syrup if you prefer it sweeter.
  4. Remove from heat and pour into a mug.
  5. Top with whipped coconut cream and dust with cocoa powder, chopped dark chocolate or crushed cacao beans.
